Soggettività e coscienza. Il naturalismo non riduzionista di Henri Bergson
by Alfonso Lanzieri
One of the most prevalent metaphysical assumptions in the field of consciousness studies (neuroscience and philosophy of mind) is physicalism, that is, the idea that fundamental reality is entirely physical and that every part of it, even the phenomenal experiences of the subject, must be reduced to certain arrangements of matter. This conception can be also called “reductive naturalism”. The purpose of this article is to show how French philosopher Henri Bergson’s study of the mind-body problem can be not only an interesting critique of the theoretical problems of physicalism, but also a useful perspective for thinking a non-reductive naturalism.
