The Pattern of Reason and the Development of the Idea in History: A Re-Reading of Hegel’s “Lectures”
This essay offers a reinterpretation of Hegel’s theories on history, focusing on the Lectures on the Philosophy of History (Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Geschichte, 1822 – 1831) but also on the Lectures on the History of Philosophy (Vorlesungen über die Geschichte der Philosophie, 1805 – 1831) and the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion (Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Religion, 1821 – 1831). Therefore, it focuses on decisive concepts and themes of the Hegelian system ̶ such as the action of reason in the development of history (which is the history of the Spirit of the world), the coexistence of the philosophy of history with the history of philosophy (hence the accusation of apriorism), the vision of history as theodicy and as theophany ̶ in order to reconstruct the complex path of thought of the great German philosopher.
