The Pattern of Reason and the Development of the Idea in History: A Re-Reading of Hegel’s Lectures
Renato Trombelli
This paper offers a reinterpretation of Hegel’s theories on history, focusing on the Lectures on the Philosophy of History (Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Geschichte, 1822 – 1831) the Lectures on the History of Philosophy (Vorlesungen über die Geschichte der Philosophie, 1805 – 1831), and the Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion (Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Religion, 1821 – 1831). It analyzes decisive concepts and themes of Hegel’s system ̶ such as the action of reason in the development of history (which is history of the Spirit of the world), the coexistence of the philosophy of history with the history of philosophy (hence the accusation of apriorism), the vision of history as theodicy / theophany ̶ in order to reconstruct the complex tragectory of Hegel’s thought.
