Thinking Among and In Others. Wilfred Bion’s “Wild Thoughts”
by Felice Cimatti
This paper analyses Wilfred Bion’s theory of thought. According to Bion, creative thinking does not take place in the individual mind, but thinking is a collective ac-tivity. The original situation in which an infant is confronted with affects and thoughts that it cannot control or understand is the original paradigm of such thinking. In this case it is the adult who takes care of the infant who feels and thinks in its own place. Thinking therefore takes place outside the individual mind, in a transindividual emotional and cognitive space.
